There was never a moment where my parents sat me down to give me the talk about the birds and the bees. Instead, at the ripe age of eleven, I stumbled upon homoerotic Sherlock fanfiction. For a few years, I completely avoided anything tagged as explicit, still deeply embarrassed by the one time I had clicked a link from tumblr and it turned out to be porn. I immediately deleted the tab upon seeing a flash of orgiastic sex, scrubbing my internet history and closing my browser, feeling dirty just from the brief glance I’d gotten at the thumbnail. Instead, I spent my time with writing tagged “fluff”, “slow burn”, and “first kiss”, indulging in the fantasy of a soft, domestic gay life that I so yearned for. Inevitably, though, I grew older, and grew curious, dipping my toes into the water of the pornographic. I learned about lube, condoms, different kinks and fetishes all through the lens of Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic characters. Soon I started seeking out the nastiest, most taboo things that I could find, purely because I could. Eventually, I stumbled onto the world A/B/O, aka Alpha/Beta/Omega, an immensely popular genre of erotic fiction.
Although the world A/B/O is varied and complex, and I am by no means an expert, these are the basics: Everyone in the world is either an Alpha, Beta, or Omega, a system which often takes the place of gender, determining their genitalia and place in the world, though the ideas of “male” and “female” still exist Alphas have penises and what we might consider “male” procreative abilities, while Omegas have vaginas and the capability to carry and birth children. Despite being in the middle of the acronym, Betas are generally akin to normal humans and rarely figure much into stories. Central to the world of A/B/O is the application of typically animalistic characteristics to humans, with Alphas and Omegas emitting sex-based pheromones that can be smelled by others and cause arousal. Merging (now debunked) ideas of animal pack dynamics and traditional gender roles, Alphas are generally dominant and protective, while Omegas are submissive and caring.
Getting further into the nitty gritty of this elaborate pornographic fantasy world, once an Alpha and Omega pair up, an Alpha will mark an Omega as theirs by biting them on the neck, solidifying their status as mates and publicizing that the Omega is no longer single. There are also certain differences when it comes to Alpha/Omega sex, particularly as it relates to procreation. Similar to a menstrual cycle, once a month Omegas go into heat, a period of a few days to a week where they feel an animalistic need for constant sex with an alpha in order to produce a child. Alphas can smell when Omegas go into heat, usually inducing arousal and leading to ferocious consummation of repressed crushes. Alphas’ penises becomes erect when aroused like normal, but they also have a “knot,” a bulbous part at the base of the penis, based on the “bulbus glandis” found on canid mammals. This knot is what enables the Alpha to impregnate an Omega, linking the two until the Alpha orgasms and his knot recedes.
Here we finally come to the central topic of this essay, male pregnancy, or “Mpreg” as it’s more commonly known. Although mpreg exists as a kink outside of A/B/O, and not all A/B/O features mpreg, male pregnancy is undeniably a major element within the A/B/O fantasy. A/B/O fanfics may include male/female pairings, but there are over 6 times as many male/male A/B/O fanfictions hosted on Archive of Our Own (AO3), the most popular fanfiction site to date. This is partially attributable to M/M fiction being more prevalent on AO3 in general, with around 3 million fics tagged M/F and 1.1 million tagged F/F compared to the staggering 5.9 million fics under M/M. However, I think it also speaks to the specific fascination that male pregnancy evokes as something both fantastical and increasingly real, especially as stories of pregnant trans men become more and more publicized.
To outsiders, mpreg is seen as something of a joke, in line with other fetishes strange and popular enough to be joked about, but not so obscure or visceral that it evokes actual disgust. Even if one completely avoids the world of fanfiction, anyone sufficiently online has likely seen a meme with mpreg, inflation, or vore, particularly in ways that evoke the shocking an absurd, featuring cartoon or video game characters like Sonic, Peter Griffin, or Mario. But mpreg’s double life as perverse humorous oddity and genuine kink raises questions as to why people find the image of pregnant men so compelling. While
the shock element surely plays a part, the cumulative millions of words describing male pregnancy in detail on AO3, not to mention other fanfiction sites, is evidence that the rabbit hole must go deeper.
On the one hand, there is the obviously sexual element to the male pregnancy kink, the “breeding” aspect. “Blaise looked to Harry’s flat belly. It would look gorgeous rounded and ripe with his children. He growled in pleasure and wrapped his arms more firmly around Harry,” reads one of the most popular fics in the mpreg tag, “The Rise of the Drackens” by StarLight_Massacre. The anticipation part of many fics prior to the sex itself highlights the arousal triggered by the idea of sex that leads to pregnancy. This includes the physicality and sensuality of pregnancy itself, the imagery of a pregnant man’s belly eroticized. But the mpreg kink extends beyond the moment of conception, into childbirth and beyond. While the fantasy of building a family is often tied to the impregnation itself, it also exists as a separate, non-sexual dream as it does for many people in the real world. Within A/B/O, the animalistic is particularly central, as having children extends beyond a personal desire into a physical need for reproduction like in the animal world. The central fantasy may only be consummated once the family has reached fruition, once the Alpha has children to protect, the Omega children to provide for.
A/B/O’s obsession with these gendered, animalistic dynamics are an interesting counterpoint to the other most popular use of the worlds “Alpha” and “Omega”: “Alpha Male” culture, led by influencers such as Andrew Tate and the men of the “Fresh and Fit” podcast. These men preach the necessity for young men to embody “alpha” male characteristics: dominance, lack of sensitivity, and control over female partners, who are ideally submissive homemakers. For women, there are “tradwife” influencers, women who believe that other must return to their “natural” roles as mothers and housewives to be truly fulfilled. Asides from the animalistic pheromones, Alphas and Omegas of A/B/O seem to fit these archetypes perfectly, with the key difference of men taking the mothering role.
Another key element to the world of A/B/O I have neglected to mention up to now is the specifically heterosexual female fascination with mpreg. With the rise of the internet, “fujoshi” culture, women who fetishize gay male relationships, is bigger than ever. The phenomenon may originate in Japan, with the publication of “yaoi” (gay male mangas) giving rise to the term since at least the 1990s. A common tendency within content aimed towards or enjoyed by fujoshis is the infantilization of gay men, a focus on innocent first loves and repressed crushes. Just in recent years, we’ve seen the explosive popularity of shows like Heartstopper, Yuri on Ice, and Skam. All feature will-they-won’t-they style romantic drama that hit on all the usual beats, with a healthy dose of internalized homophobia and peer bullying.
Why is it that so many straight women are captivated by the stories of gay men? One theory is that soft gay men represent the polar opposite of typical patriarchal expectations for straight men, expectations that often lead to misogynistic violence. In yaoi, men are loving, caring, sensitive, and willing to apologize, qualities which groups like the “alpha males” may firmly reject, but which many (if not most) straight women desire in a partner. A/B/O and mpreg, then, take this fantasy to its logical limit, allowing men to both inhabit the typically masculine dominant role as well as the submissive, caring, mothering role. In a world of increasingly complicated gender dynamics, A/B/O creates a space where our personalities, desires, and needs are primal and intrinsic. Alphas and Omegas do not get into “situationships,” do not need to worry about who should pay the bill, whether or not the guy they matched with on tinder only wants emotionless sex. An Alpha or an Omega practically only needs to smell or touch the person they’ve just met in order to know they’re the one, know they are guaranteed a secure future of familial bliss.
In a post-sexual revolution world, where the success of feminism lies on unsteady footing, the popularity of the A/B/O fantasy is intriguing. On the surface, it seems totally counter to decades of feminist thought, imposing strict, regressive, gendered hierarchies onto the world, where the submissive partner becomes the property of the dominant one. On the other hand, the current state of romantics is undeniably bleak. Between dating apps, hookup culture, and increasing societal alienation, simplistic fantasy may provide a respite. After all, it’s hard to believe that those invested in A/B/O actually want to embody these dynamics in the real world. In fact, many fanfics actually tackle how gender discrimination and oppression might operate within its world. Since male/female dynamics no longer rule the world, this means that men, too, can experience discrimination, another reason why women might find this world so compelling.
For example, a common A/B/O trope is the Omega wearing pheromone suppressants to publicly present as Betas, which they either go off of for the Alpha they desire, or which the Alpha can miraculously smell through. The reason for these pheromone blockers is often to prevent unwanted sexual harassment in the world from Alphas unable to suppress their desires. Even further, many stories go into depth describing how, in the past, Omegas were prevented from working or providing for themselves due to restrictive Alpha laws. Going off one’s suppressants, then (which also often induces an especially strong heat), represents an Omega’s trust in an Alpha to the point they feel comfortable receding into their primal, animalistic
need for sex, mating, and procreation. By contrast, there are also many fics that explore how the consequences of sexual assault might play out for Alphas and Omegas, such as unconsensual mating bites, forced withdrawl from suppressants, or even arranged marriages.
While A/B/O and mpreg may trigger knee jerk disgust or confusion in outsiders, it’s undeniable most of its authors care deeply about its world beyond kink and fetish. This is not to say that kink and fetish aren’t inherently valid subjects for art, but the level of detail to A/B/O clearly speaks to a deeper desire. In A/B/O, both men and women alike can inhabit roles that yearn for the deeply human need for care, connection, and family bonds. Especially for a world where women and men alike are increasingly pressured to focus on professional and individual success, perhaps it is not so strange that we find fiction that embraces the validity of love and family as a life goal.
